Additional Information

Why should my home have smoke alarms?

In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm can save your life and those you love. Smoke alarms provide an early warning signal so you and your family can escape.

Where should I install smoke alarms?
Every level of your home, all bedrooms, hallways, living areas and basement.

Where can I get smoke alarms?
Call your local fire department, hardware store, Lowes or Home Depot.

How do I keep my smole alarms working?
Replace smoke alarm batteries once a year. If it chirps, replace batteries and reset. Newer smoke alarms have a 10 year battery installed so in 10 years replace the whole unit.

What happens if my smoke alarms go off while I am cooking?
Then it works! Wave a towel in front of the smoke alarm and it will go off. If it continues to go off when you cook, you may need to move it.

Fireplace Safety
Always clean and have your fireplace and chimney inspected yearly. Keep all furniture a          minimum of  3 feet away from a burning fire in any type of fireplace. Avoid using wet, rotten or moldy wood. Use wood that has been seasoned for 12 months. Store wood properly out of the weather and off the ground. Choose the right wood, oak and other hard woods burn long and hot. Soft woods burn fiercely hot and very fast. Always have a fire extinguisher handy.

Christmas Tree Safety
When buying a live tree, make sure it is fresh and make sure no needles fall off while touching or shaking the tree. Make sure your tree is watered daily. Your tree stand should be wide based so the tree doesn't fall over. Also, check your lights to make sure there are no broken wires, cuts, or frays. Remember to place your trees away from heat sources. Christmas Tree Safety Brochure
